I can't seem to find a clear explanation of the requirements for recertification. I am currently certified L2. Earlier this fall I took a joint YMCA & USA-S class. Recently I completed and passed the USA-S recert test. I was told at a recent meet that the results of the USA-S recert test can be submitted to YMCA in lieu of taking another test. Is this correct and what else do I need to do in order to prevent my certification from lapsing?

Certification or re-certification as a YMCA official requires that you attend a YMCA clinic, which you did by attending a joint YMCA/USA-S clinic.  It also requires that you pass the appropriate YMCA test, which is basically the USA-S test with a number of additional YMCA related questions.

In cases where the official recently took the appropriate level USA-S test (say within the last six months), then the candidate only has to answer the YMCA specific questions on the YMCA test.  Your YMCA trainer can guide you as to which questions apply for which test.  As a caution however, when completing the specific YMCA questions, you are going to have to print out the YMCA test and manually answer and submit the questions, because if you only answer those questions on the YMCA electronic test and submit it, you will be notified that you failed the test and the results will be erased (so you could take it again).

Thanks for your response Ed. It sounds like it would really be just as easy to take the full YMCA re-cert test. Is there a form or application I need to submit as part of the process?

You said you took a joint YMCA/USA-S clinic.  In that case, just talk with your YMCA clinic instructor who can guide you.  After you complete the test, send him/her the notification and he/she will include you in the clinic report to Y-USA and they will issue your card.
