![]() Topic: Swimsuits for Spring NationalsPosted: Jan/08/2010 at 8:51am |

I see FINA finalized their list of approved suits for 2010 recently. Does anyone know if these will be enforced at Spring Nationals? I have several swimmers with legskins, need to know if they should buy new suits. Thanks!

As the YMCA follows USA-S rules, and USA-S follows FINA rules, we will enforce the FINA list of approved swimsuits for Spring Nationals.

Mr. Miller: Will a girl swimmer be able to compete officially in the Speedo FS II classic swim suit (Style No: 7190141) at Y Nationals?
PRODUCT DETAILS and image of suit below. Thanks. FINA approved style. Fully compliant with the new FINA rules that come into effect beginning January 2010. Fastskin FSII, the most advanced and lowest drag racing swimwear in the world to date! Fastskin fabric mimics the rough shark denticles to reduce drag in key areas and features a Turbulence Management System. Grey Flexskin fabric splices allow greater flexibility and less drag. These fabrics were positioned to accomodate the changing flow conditions along the swimmer's body. See FSII Info Center below for details of the Turbulence Management System. Fabric:81% Nylon/19% Lycra spandex. Import.![]() Edited by mameyer - Mar/11/2010 at 3:02pm |

The FINA listing could not cover every suit that was ever out on the market; they covered the currently available suits, and provided guidance as to the older suits. I assume that you are concerned because you have an older suit (i.e., one purchased before the January 10, 2010 FINA approved list), which may have the same name as a suit on the approved list, but the number may not agree.
Suits purchased before the latest FINA list are acceptable for the YMCA Short Course National Championships as long as they meet the USA-S guidelines for older suits, that is:
- they must be made of woven fabric; they cannot have any rubberized
material such as polyurethane or neoprene
- they cannot extend below the knee or above the navel for men's suits
- they cannot extend below the knee or above the shoulders or cover
the neck for women's suits
- they cannot have any zippers or snaps.
The one thing you must watch out for is that some of the older Speedo FS suits had decorative silicone dots or nubs on the front of the suit. Suits with these decorative dots were specifically disapproved by FINA. However, the good news is that the dots can easily be picked off the suit and then it will be acceptable.
Hope that helps.
